In 1785, the composer Joseph Haydn was asked to compose music for an Easter service for the cathedral in the Spanish city of Cadiz to set the seven words of Jesus Christ on the cross. Haydn created a unique and original work on the theme of the redemptive death of Jesus Christ - "The Seven Last Words of the Redeemer on the Cross".
