Description

In 1961, this site was declared a national nature monument.
In the second half of the 19th century, a quarry for mining cinder, which served for paving roads, was founded here. The profile of four basic layers of volcanic sediment was uncovering by the mining, proving the origin of the volcano with at least two eruptions that occurred at different times. The volcano was first described by J. W. Goethe.

Why Železná hůrka (Iron Hill)?
The name of the volcano is associated with the mining of iron ore in its proximity in the 17th to 19th centuries. In the 13th to 16th centuries, gold was actually mined here.
